When an Xbox won’t turn on, a stuck power supply is often the cause. Microsoft’s support pages list a short set of checks, one for the Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One X, and Xbox One S, and another for the original Xbox One. This guide follows them in order.

Xbox Won’t Turn On: Series X|S, One X, and One S

How do you reset the internal power supply?

These consoles have an internal power supply. Microsoft says power problems often follow a power surge that resets the supply. Unplug the power cord from the console, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and press the Xbox button on the front. If it turns on, the reset worked.

What if your Xbox won’t turn on after the reset?

Check that the wall outlet works with other devices. Make sure the power cable is firmly connected at both ends. Microsoft also says to use the cable that came with the console, and that it must be the correct one for your region.

Could poor ventilation be the problem?

Microsoft says a console that keeps turning off might not be getting proper ventilation. For the Series X and Series S, it calls for 4 to 6 inches of clearance on all sides. It also says not to put the console in an enclosed cabinet or block the vents.

When does the console need service?

Microsoft says to try every step first. Otherwise, you could ask for a new power supply when the console is the part that needs repair. If your Xbox still won’t turn on, sign in to Device Services with your Microsoft account and submit a service order.

When the Original Xbox One Won’t Turn On

How do you reset the external power supply?

The original Xbox One has a separate power supply. Microsoft says to unplug the cables from the console, the wall, and the power supply. Wait 10 seconds. Plug the cable into the outlet and the power supply, but not the console. Check the light on the power supply.

What does the light say when your Xbox won’t turn on?

If the light is on, plug the power supply into the console and press the Xbox button on the console. If the console starts, you are done. If it does not, the console needs service. If the light stays off or flashes orange, the power supply needs to be replaced.

Is Microsoft still supporting it?

Not for out-of-warranty units. Microsoft says it no longer makes the original Xbox One or its power supply, so that support is gone.

Editor’s Take

If your Xbox won’t turn on, most of the fixes cost nothing. Unplug the console, wait, and try again before you order a part. If your original Xbox One is out of warranty, check the terms of any repair provider before you pay. Own a PlayStation too? Our guide to factory resetting a PS4 and PS4 Pro covers the Sony side.
