The use of words “renewable energy” may seem like a publicity stunt that companies use to attract attention, but there are really good positive effects on the environment. Today, T-Mobile has announced that they’re joining the lot of companies that have made the pledge to renewable energy.

T-Mobile says that they’re committed 100 percent to renewable electricity by 2021. They’re also joining RE100, a global initiative of companies that have full renewable energy as a stated goal and are 100 percent behind it.

The wireless carrier will be supporting this goal through a new wind power farm in Kansas, working together with the farm it already has built in Oklahoma. The two sources will work together to provide renewable energy to about 60 percent of T-Mobile’s power supply. “To reach 100%, T-Mobile will buy enough wind power annually to account for every unit of electricity the company consumes,” the press release states.

Our of the major wireless carriers in the US, T-Mobile is the first to join RE100 and commit to being completely use of green energy. AT&T is said to be focused on reducing its electricity consumption and renewable options; by 2025, “AT&T will enable carbon savings 10 times the footprint of our operations by enhancing the efficiency of our network and delivering sustainable customer solutions,” according to their website. Sprint doesn’t seem to have any policy in place for such a thing. Verizon is said to be focused on both reducing its carbon footprint and investing more in environmental energy production: “We’ve set a new goal to add 24MW of green energy in our operations by 2025, doubling our current capacity,” according to Verizon’s website.
