Apple’s latest hardware offering has quite a bit of AR push behind it. ARKit has been the centerpiece of Apple’s latest push, and we know that it’s a precursor to Apple’s future AR glasses offering.
Apple recently spoke to The Independent and gave us some insight as to Apple’s thinking of AR. Cook raised praises of augmented reality, but was unwilling to commit to any wearable developments.
“There are rumours and stuff about companies working on those – we obviously don’t talk about what we’re working on,” he said. The reasoning behind seems to be technological limitations and not the lack of desire the lack of bringing the product to the market. Due to the lack of technology needed, that is what’s keeping the product from being brought to consumers.
“Today I can tell you the technology itself doesn’t exist to do that in a quality way. The display technology required, as well as putting enough stuff around your face – there’s huge challenges with that,” he said.
“The field of view, the quality of the display itself, it’s not there yet.”
Apple doesn’t believe in releasing products just to release them. According to Cook, the company will ship products if it can do it “in a quality way.”
“We don’t give a rat’s about being first, we want to be the best, and give people a great experience,” said Cook. Despite the comments from Cook, we know that Apple AR glasses are in the works. Perhaps the iPhone X is a test drive for the company to further its development investment and research around AR.
