If you want a package to arrive before Christmas, the clock is already running. The U.S. Postal Service’s recommended last day to send most ground parcels within the lower 48 states is December 17, FedEx’s cutoffs begin on December 15, and UPS has not yet posted its 2026 last-day dates by service. These holiday shipping deadlines are recommendations, not guarantees, and they apply to delivery by December 24 or 25. This guide lays out the dates carriers have published, what extra fees are arriving this season, and a few steps that cut the risk of a late gift.
Holiday shipping deadlines at a glance
For ground parcels inside the lower 48 states, the earliest published date is FedEx Ground Economy on December 15, followed by USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail on December 17. Faster services run later, and UPS is the one carrier without posted dates. The sections below give each carrier’s list.
USPS holiday shipping deadlines
The Postal Service announced its recommended dates on September 22. For delivery before December 25 within the contiguous states, the dates are December 17 for USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail, and December 19 for Priority Mail Express, according to the USPS release.
For Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories, the same release lists December 17 for First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail, and December 19 for Priority Mail Express. Ground Advantage does not get a single date there. USPS says packages between the contiguous states and those places carry a service expectation of 10 days or longer, and the time varies by location. You can check an exact ZIP-to-ZIP estimate on the USPS service commitments tool.
A banner on the USPS release page also says international mail to Canada is temporarily suspended starting November 29 because of a strike by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers. If you plan to send a gift to Canada, check the USPS site for the latest status before you pay for postage. Dates for military and international addresses were due to appear on the USPS holiday dates page in mid-October.
FedEx holiday shipping deadlines

FedEx lists last recommended ship dates for delivery by December 24, based on a summary of its schedule from Value Added Resource. FedEx Ground Economy is December 15. FedEx Ground and Home Delivery depends on how many days the trip takes: December 17 for five-day transit, December 18 for four days, December 21 for three days, December 22 for two days, and December 23 for one day. FedEx Express Saver is December 21, FedEx 2Day is December 22, and the overnight services are December 23. FedEx SameDay is December 24.
Ground transit times depend on the origin and destination ZIP codes, so check the FedEx transit tool before you pick a date. A package going from Maine to Oregon needs more time than one going across town.
UPS holiday shipping deadlines
As of the pages we reviewed on October 21, UPS had published its holiday operating schedule but not its recommended last-day-to-ship dates by service, according to Ship.com’s roundup. What is confirmed: UPS delivers on December 24 for all services, handles pickup that day only for Air and international Air shipments arranged by December 18, and does not pick up or deliver on Christmas Day. UPS Ground has no pickup on December 24.
Last year’s UPS dates, which are not this year’s, were December 19 for 3 Day Select, December 22 for 2nd Day Air, and December 23 for Next Day Air. Treat those only as a rough guide and check UPS.com for the 2026 versions once they appear.
New holiday fees
Higher shipping costs sit alongside the holiday shipping deadlines this season. According to Value Added Resource’s separate reporting on holiday surcharges, UPS will charge $0.50 extra per residential Ground and Ground Saver package in its first and final holiday periods and $0.75 from November 22 through December 26, up from $0.40 and $0.60 last year. FedEx’s residential Ground and Home Delivery surcharge starts at $0.50 and rises to $0.80 from November 23 through December 27, versus $0.40 and $0.65 last year.
USPS is in the mix too. That reporting says the Postal Service put temporary peak-season price increases in place from October 4 through January 17 on Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select, but the article body gave no amounts. It also does not say how any of this reaches buyers. Sellers that ship in volume may pay negotiated rates, so the extra cost could surface in shipping charges or prices instead of a line item.
How to beat the holiday shipping deadlines

Some fixes cost nothing. Mail a few days before the posted date, since those dates assume normal weather and volume. Choose a service with tracking, and open the tracking page yourself instead of tapping a link in a text. Fake package-delivery texts are a common trick, and our guide to spotting a scam text shows how to recognize one. A carrier text that asks for payment or personal details is a red flag, so go to the carrier’s website directly.
If you ship a lot, build the cost into your plan. Shipping fees can add up fast when several gifts go to different states, and a simple monthly plan like the one in our guide to making a budget can help you set a limit before December.
If a package is late
A package that misses its estimated date is not necessarily lost. Begin with the carrier’s own tracking page, then call or message customer service if nothing changes, and keep the receipt and tracking number close in case you need them. Remember too that the dates in this guide are recommendations. A parcel sent after them may still arrive in time, though none of the carriers has promised it will.
What to watch next on holiday shipping deadlines
Two things could change the picture before December. One is the UPS list, which should arrive by service once the carrier publishes it and is worth checking against your gift list the day it appears. The other is the USPS holiday dates page, which should carry the military and international dates and is the place to recheck the Canada suspension. Bad weather or heavy volume can also move holiday shipping deadlines, so look again a week before your planned ship date.
Editor’s take
The simplest rule for this year’s holiday shipping deadlines is to mail early and to pick the slower, cheaper service for gifts that do not need to be rushed. The published dates leave a thin margin, and carriers are adding fees on top. Shipping early also lets you use ground service instead of paying for air. Plan your list now, and use the carriers’ own tools for exact dates.
