United Airlines flew more passengers than ever this summer, grew revenue per seat faster than in any quarter since the pandemic, yet still posted lower adjusted profit than a year ago. The reason is jet fuel. In United Airlines earnings released after the close on October 20, the company said third-quarter revenue rose 17.4% to $17.875 billion, a quarterly record, while adjusted earnings fell to $2.54 a share from $2.78. Shares slipped in after-hours trading, weighed down by a fourth-quarter profit forecast well below analyst expectations. Here is what the numbers show.

What United Airlines earnings showed

The headline figures come from United’s 8-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Total operating revenue was $17.875 billion, with passenger revenue up 17.6% to $16.241 billion and cargo up 22.9% to $529 million. Net income rose 8.5% to $1.029 billion, or $3.14 a share, but that figure includes items the company strips out of its adjusted results. On an adjusted basis, net income fell 8.4% to $833 million.

Analysts had expected adjusted earnings of about $2.58 a share and revenue of about $17.89 billion, according to Yahoo Finance. Adjusted earnings missed by four cents, and revenue came in a hair short. Either way, the miss was small, and the bigger story in United’s earnings sits further down the income statement. Operating margin was 8.1%, down from 9.2%, and the adjusted version was 6.9%.

Aircraft fuel expense jumped 61.6% to $4.843 billion, about $1.8 billion more than a year earlier. United burned only 0.8% more gallons, so the increase was almost entirely price: the average cost was $3.90 a gallon, against $2.43 a year ago. By our arithmetic, the extra fuel absorbed about two-thirds of the roughly $2.6 billion in added revenue. That single line explains why adjusted pre-tax margin dropped to 6.2% from 8.0% even as revenue climbed.

Capacity grew just 1.3%, so United was not flying its way into the problem. Costs outside fuel also climbed: the airline’s unit cost measure that excludes fuel and other items, known as CASM-ex, rose 7.8% to 13.09 cents. We covered the oil-price backdrop in our report on gas prices and Brent crude, and airlines face the same exposure, but on a much larger scale.

Demand was not the problem

Customers kept paying, which is the encouraging part of United Airlines earnings. United carried a record 49.5 million passengers, up 2.4%, and revenue per available seat mile rose about 16%, which Yahoo describes as the best quarterly unit revenue growth since the pandemic. Premium cabin revenue rose 17%, basic economy 16%, loyalty 17%, and contracted business revenue 26%.

Passengers also paid more for each mile flown. Yield, the revenue earned per passenger mile, rose 16.8% to 21.86 cents. This aligns with higher fares, although the release does not state fares directly. Load factor slipped to 83.9% from 84.4%, so planes were slightly less full even as prices went up.

The fourth-quarter guide

The market reacted to the forecast more than the quarter. United expects fourth-quarter revenue growth above 20% and another record, but guided adjusted earnings to a range of $0.50 to $1.50 a share. The midpoint of $1.00 is well below the $1.88 consensus, per Yahoo’s report. Shares fell almost 4% in after-hours trading in that account, while Benzinga, which put the earnings estimate at $2.59, had them down 2.12% at $95.70. Extended-hours moves are thin and can reverse by the open, so treat both numbers as a rough guide.

Cash, debt and the revolver

Fuel also showed up in cash, the less-noticed half of United Airlines earnings. United’s free cash flow was negative $1.843 billion for the quarter, and for the first nine months it was $1.382 billion, down from $3.289 billion a year earlier. Net leverage rose to 2.4 times from 2.1 times, with available liquidity at $17.7 billion. Share repurchases totaled just $27 million for the nine months, against $610 million in the same period last year. On October 16 United also expanded its revolving credit facility, lifting it from $3 billion to $5 billion, according to the release.

Taken together, those figures describe a company that is buying time rather than spending freely. Nothing in them suggests distress, since liquidity is large next to debt of $26.4 billion, but the direction of cash flow is worth watching if fuel stays high.

What it means for travelers

For anyone booking winter and holiday trips, United Airlines earnings point toward firm pricing. Strong demand, higher yields and a fuel bill that has grown this much do not point to airlines rushing to discount, though that is our read and not a forecast. On the product side, the company said Starlink Wi-Fi is on more than 640 aircraft and available on about half of its flights, with coverage planned to reach 61% by the end of 2026 and the whole fleet by the end of 2027, according to the release. The Airbus A321XLR started domestic service in September. This is general information, not investment or travel advice, and fares vary by route and date.

What to watch next in United Airlines earnings

Three items matter. First, the fuel price, which is the swing factor in the forecast. Second, the earnings call and investor update for detail behind the $0.50 to $1.50 range. Third, whether other airlines report similar margin pressure. Domino’s gave investors a comparable lesson when a beat was not enough, which we described in our piece on the Domino’s results and store growth. United Airlines earnings will look different next quarter if fuel eases, and rougher if it does not.

Editor’s take

United’s quarter is a clean example of revenue strength that does not reach the bottom line. Customers are paying more and flying in record numbers, yet a 60% jump in the price of fuel took about two-thirds of the added revenue. The guide, not the beat or miss, is what moved the stock. Until fuel comes down or fares rise faster than costs, the story in United Airlines earnings is likely to stay the same: strong demand and thin margins.
