If you remember Opera Max, it was a great way to keep track of what apps were using data in the background and providing you with some level of privacy. This all went away when Opera announced it was shutting down the app.

It seems that Samsung has taken upon itself to bring the app from the dead. The company has revived the app under the name Samsung Max. While Samsung is reviving the app, there’s something you need to know. If you were hoping to use the app on non-Galaxy handset, you’re in for some bad news. The app will only work for Galaxy-branded phones after Max drops its Opera branding.

Reported by Venture Beat, the app has received a UI refresh, but it’s no longer a VPN. Instead, the app will use DNS masking feature to keep your IP address intact. Samsung has promised that it will keep updating Max’s data-saving and privacy protection features, but only time will tell. The app will come pre-installed on certain devices in developing nations including Argentine, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand and Vietnam.
