Today, Apple settled with Qualcomm that send shocks in the industry. It was a surprising move because of the heated legal battle between the two companies around the world.

Now, Intel has suddenly announced that it’s not going to try building 5G modems for smartphones. For those who don’t know, Apple has been trying to replace Qualcomm with Intel’s 5G modems and not rely as much on the former company. However, Intel has reportedly been having issues with implementing 5G tech, which is the reason why we have not seen them in iPhones yet.

In a statement, Intel said that it “does not expect to launch 5G modem products in the smartphone space, including those originally planned for launches in 2020.” According to CEO Bob Swan “We are very excited about the opportunity in 5G and the ‘cloudification’ of the network, but in the smartphone modem business it has become apparent that there is no clear path to profitability and positive returns.”

While Intel may be pulling away from 5G tech in smartphones, the company plans to continue to “assess” the opportunities for 4G and 5G in PC, IoT and other devices. In addition, the company plans to continue investing in developing 5G infrastructure technology.
