After years of debate, Microsoft has finally realized that Kinect is finally dead. The software giant has stopped manufacturing for the accessory. A new report from Fast Co Design tells us that the depth camera and microphone accessory have sold around 35 million units since original debut in November, 2010.

At one point, Microsoft’ Kinect for Xbox 360 became fastest-selling consumer device back in 2011, and won recognition from Guinness World Records as well. While the idea and use of Kinect was good, it became the central hub for a lot of bad things. For example, it was popular among hackers to create experience that tracked body movement and sensed depth.

Microsoft tried to bring Kinect into further mainstream with the Xbox One, but it didn’t live up to expectations due to price point and lack of features. Then Microsoft unbundled the accessory from the Xbox One and tried to bring it with the Xbox One S, but again failed.

The software giant’s Kinect can’t really be said as a failed product. After all, it did sell around 35 million units, and it was used by millions. The research and what Microsoft learned from the product is what matters most where its experience can be used elsewhere.
