Vimeo launches new streaming platform after acquiring Livestream

Vimeo just made an investment in the live-streaming area and has added live-streaming tools to its video platform with the launch of Vimeo Live. If you want to live streaming, you will be able to use Vimeo Live to stream from virtually anywhere and videos will also be automatically archived when the live stream ends.

As an added feature, there will be a chat sidebar on each live stream video. In a statement, Vimeo CEO Anjali Sud said that “Live streaming is the No. 1 request from our creator community this year, and we’re focused on bringing a new level of quality, convenience, and craft to this evolving medium.”

The feature, unfortunately will not be available to a major portion of Vimeo’s creator community. Sud told Variety that Vimeo Live is “not a consumer-level product,” and will cost $75 a month.

With launching Vimeo Live, the company will be acquiring Livestream, an online live video technology company. Once the deal is done, Vimeo will integrate Vimeo Live into the service’s platform. For now, Vimeo Live will be its own standalone platform. There is no support for mobile streaming yet, but will be brought up once the acquisition is complete.
