Google’s Project Fi will now offer unlimited data (there’s a catch)

Google’s Project Fi has been popular among those that like to travel abroad, for example, and want to save money on data charges. On the other hand, it’s not exactly a good deal if you want to use a lot of data. There is a new option for those of you interested in Project Fi, but haven’t signed up for the service.

Google has introduced a new unlimited option called Bill Protection. This new Bill Protection feature will cap your data bill at $60 if you use over 6GB in a given month. Essentially, $60 (plus your base bill) will get you as much data as you need, but with a catch. It’s not exactly unlimited as you’d expect it to be, but it’s more a bridge between Fi’s approach to cell service and what other US carriers offer.

If you go over 15GB in a given month, you’ll be throttled to “slower” speeds. After you’ve reached the limit, you Google will drop you to 256Kbps speeds, which is enough for basic tasks, but you won’t be streaming Netflix, that’s for sure. This new Bill Protection feature only applies to international use and data-only service, Google added. It’s rolling everything out now to both individuals and groups on Project Fi, and will starting in your next billing cycle.

Google is bringing this new feature to help bridge the gap and represent best of both worlds. You can effectively use unlimited data if you want to, but you don’t have to pay for unlimited data in the months where you only use a few gigs. If you’re interested in keeping costs down and having pretty good service, by all means sign up for Google’s Project Fi.
