Picking between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini used to mean comparing three chatbots that cost about $20 a month. In October 2026 it means comparing three families of models, five or six price tiers each, different free tiers, and in one case ads. This guide sticks to what each company says on its own pages, so you can decide what is worth paying for.

Short version: all three are strong, and the right pick depends more on your habits than on a winner. Prices below are as of Oct. 13, 2026. ChatGPT has the widest set of plans, including an $8 tier. Claude is the one that says it will stay ad-free and includes a coding agent from its $17 Pro plan. Gemini fits best if you live in Gmail, Docs and Google storage, and it has the cheapest paid tier at $4.99. Try the free versions first.

What changed for 2026

  • New model lines. ChatGPT is now on GPT-6 (Luna, Sol and Astra). Claude is on its 5.x line: Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5. Gemini’s paid plans advertise Gemini 3.1 Pro with the 3.x Flash models. The GPT-5, Claude 4.5 and Gemini 2.5 models our 2025 version covered are no longer the current ones.
  • Plans were renamed and added. Google One AI Premium became Google AI Pro, and Google added AI Plus at $4.99 and two Ultra tiers. ChatGPT added Go at $8 and split Pro into $100, $200 and $500 tiers. Claude added Max at $100 and $200.
  • ChatGPT shows ads on Free and Go. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts have none. Anthropic has said Claude will remain ad-free.
  • Student offers now exist. Our 2025 version said there were none. As of Oct. 13, 2026, eligible US college students can claim four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus through Oct. 31, 2026, or redeem a free year of Google AI Pro through Dec. 31, 2026.
  • Free tiers got bigger. OpenAI says Free includes unlimited everyday text chats, and Claude’s free plan now includes memory, Artifacts, web search and connectors.
  • Old product names are gone. GPT-3.5, DALL-E 3 and Gemini Advanced do not appear on the current pricing pages.

How we compared them

We read the pricing, help and release-note pages that OpenAI, Anthropic and Google publish, and re-checked them on October 13, 2026, and we only repeat figures we saw on those pages. We did not rerun a new set of side-by-side prompt tests for this update, so this version does not declare winners on writing quality or code quality. Our 2025 article did, and those results were for models that have since been replaced. Where the companies publish no number, for example how many messages you get on a paid plan, we say so and do not guess. Prices are US prices on the web; app-store prices may differ, and some vendor pages contradict each other, which we note where it matters.

The models each plan uses (October 2026)

ChatGPT (OpenAI): Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna in chat. OpenAI’s release notes say Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise use GPT-6 Sol in chat and that Pro’s reasoning option uses GPT-6 Astra; the pricing page also lists GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra on Plus. OpenAI says GPT-6 reached ChatGPT users on October 7, 2026 for paid plans and from October 8 for Free and Go.

Claude (Anthropic): the lineup is Fable 5.1 (September 1, 2026), Opus 5.5 (September 22), Sonnet 5.5 (September 28) and Haiku 5.5 (October 7). According to Anthropic’s pricing page, Free plan users get Sonnet and Haiku models, not Opus or Fable. Fable is not part of Pro’s usage limits and is billed through usage credits.

Gemini (Google): as of Oct. 13, 2026, Google’s subscription page lists Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite on Free, 3.6 Flash and 3.1 Pro on AI Plus, and 3.8 Flash and 3.1 Pro on AI Pro and Ultra, with first access to Deep Think on Ultra. The Gemini release notes confirm the 3.1 Pro and 3.6 Flash launches in the app. Google’s help article on limits uses generic Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro labels and warns that model names may change, so check the model picker for what you actually get.

US prices read from the vendors’ pages on October 13, 2026. ChatGPT Business prices come from OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing documentation.

A few things the table hides:

  • ChatGPT Pro comes in three tiers and is monthly only. Plus has no annual option.
  • Claude Max is billed monthly only, at $100 or $200, and Max plans come with API credits. Claude Pro is $17 a month if you pay yearly.
  • Gemini plans bundle storage. AI Plus lists 400 GB, AI Pro 5 TB, and Ultra 20 TB or more. Google AI Pro also has an annual price of $199.99, while Ultra is billed monthly only.

Free tiers compared

ChatGPT Free gives unlimited everyday text chats, with abuse limits, and limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory and Codex. File uploads are limited to 3 a day. The free tier uses GPT-6 Luna, and ads may appear.

Claude Free includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors, Artifacts, voice mode and up to 5 projects. It does not include Research or Claude Code. Anthropic does not publish a message count.

Gemini Free includes image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live, Canvas, Gems, limited access to Google Flow, and 15 GB of storage. Google does not publish exact limits.

None of the three publish the number of messages you get free or paid, and all three use limits that vary with how heavy your requests are. If you hit a limit, you will see it in the app.

What the paid plans add

Context window and file uploads

The context window is how much text the model can consider at once. The vendors state these figures:

  • Claude: 1 million tokens for Fable 5.1, Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 in chat on paid plans. Chat uploads can be up to 500 MB per file and 20 files per chat, with PDFs up to 1,000 pages.
  • ChatGPT: OpenAI’s pricing page lists an instant-model window of 27K tokens on Free, 54K on Go and Plus, and 128K on Pro, with reasoning windows of 256K on Go and Plus and 400K on Pro. Documents can be up to 512 MB per file.
  • Gemini: Google’s help article lists 32K on Free, 128K on AI Plus and 1 million on AI Pro and Ultra, and says 1 million tokens is enough for about 1,500 pages of text.

In the developer APIs all three vendors now offer roughly 1 million tokens on their top models. In the consumer apps the numbers above are what the companies state, and they differ by plan.

Research and agents

  • ChatGPT: deep research (limited on Free and Go), Codex for coding, and ChatGPT Work, which is limited to the desktop app on Free and Go and expands to web and mobile from Plus.
  • Claude: Research and Claude Code start on Pro. Claude in Chrome and the Microsoft 365 add-in are also Pro and above.
  • Gemini: Deep Research is on Free. AI Pro adds coding tools such as Jules and Google Antigravity and Chrome auto browse, and Ultra adds first access to Deep Think and Gemini Spark (in select countries).

Which one fits your needs?

These matches come from what each product includes, not from our own scoring. Models change often, so try your actual work on the free tiers before paying.

  • Writers and people who work with long documents: Claude and Gemini both list context windows around 1 million tokens on their paid plans, and Claude lists large file limits. Test the same draft in each and pick the voice you prefer.
  • Developers: all three have a coding agent: Codex in ChatGPT, Claude Code in Claude from Pro, and Jules or Antigravity in Google AI Pro. Our 2025 advice to test two for a week on your own code still holds.
  • Students: Gemini and ChatGPT both have time-limited student offers (see below). Anthropic says it has no standard discounted pricing for individual Claude plans.
  • Google Workspace users: Google lists Gemini in Gmail and Vids from AI Plus and adds Docs from AI Pro, and the paid plans include 400 GB to 20 TB or more of Google storage.
  • Budget users: Gemini AI Plus at $4.99 and ChatGPT Go at $8 are the cheapest paid steps. Keep in mind that Go can show ads, while OpenAI says Plus and above do not. If you already pay for several subscriptions, the budgeting apps we compared can flag recurring charges you have forgotten about.
  • Casual users: start with the free tiers of all three and see which interface you like.

Privacy and data use

On their pricing pages, ChatGPT and Claude both list model training for consumer plans as opt-out. In ChatGPT you can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Settings, Data controls, or use Temporary Chats. In Claude you can switch off the “Help improve our AI models” setting in Settings, Privacy, and Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used for training. In Gemini, turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from being used to improve Google’s AI models, and temporary chats are not used for training. Google also says a subset of chats is reviewed by humans, and reviewed data is kept for up to three years. As of Oct. 13, 2026, Google says Gemini chats are not used to show you ads. Business and team plans at OpenAI and Anthropic are not used for training by default. Read the current policy before you paste anything sensitive, and do not paste anything you could not afford to leak.

Claude Opus 5.5$4$20
Claude Sonnet 5.5$2$10
Claude Haiku 5.5$0.10 (up to 100K prompt)$0.50 (up to 100K prompt)
OpenAI GPT-6 Astra$10$50
OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol$2$10
OpenAI GPT-6 Luna$0.10$0.50

Gemini 3.8 Flash$0.75 through Dec 31, 2026, then $1.50$3.75 through Dec 31, 2026, then $7.50
Standard rates from each vendor’s API pricing page, October 13, 2026. Long-context and batch rates differ.

Our 2025 article said GPT-5 API costs ran about $10 per million input tokens and $30 per million output. That does not match any current OpenAI model. For most readers this is irrelevant: a monthly plan costs the same however much you chat.

Hidden costs and limits

  • Ads on ChatGPT Free and Go. They can appear below the end of a response, are labeled as sponsored, and OpenAI says they are not shown to accounts identified as under 18. Testing started in the US on February 9, 2026, and as of Oct. 13, 2026, OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads are available in over 60 countries, including 31 European markets, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, India and much of Southeast Asia. Where ads run, Free users can pick a no-ads option with lower limits.
  • Usage caps you cannot see in advance. Claude paid plans use a session limit that resets every five hours plus a weekly limit. Gemini limits refresh on a five-hour cycle up to a weekly cap. OpenAI’s pricing page describes deep research only as limited, expanded or maximum by plan.
  • Premium models can cost extra. Claude’s Fable models are billed through usage credits on Pro and are not covered by Pro’s normal limits.
  • Prices can differ by app store and country. Anthropic, for example, says mobile pricing for Max may differ from web prices. Check checkout before you pay.
  • Stale help pages. Some OpenAI and Google help articles still name older models or plans. When pages disagree, we went with the pricing page and newest release notes.

Can you use more than one?

Yes. A reasonable approach is to pay for one plan, then use the others’ free versions for the jobs they do well, such as long documents in one and Google-connected research in another. Pay for a second subscription only if you keep hitting the first one’s limit, or if one tool has a feature you use every day.

Other AI tools worth knowing

The big three are not the only choices. Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Grok, Meta AI, Mistral and Midjourney each have their own free and paid tiers, and we list their plans in our AI tool pricing tracker. Perplexity is built around cited web answers, Midjourney around image generation, and Copilot around Microsoft 365. Their prices change often, so check the vendor page before you subscribe.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini?

None is better for everyone. ChatGPT has the most plan options, including an $8 tier. Claude includes Claude Code and Research from its Pro plan and has pledged to remain ad-free. Gemini bundles Google storage and Workspace integration. Try each free tier on your own work.

Is the $20 plan still the standard price?

Roughly. As of Oct. 13, 2026, ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, Claude Pro is $20 monthly or $17 a month billed annually, and Google AI Pro is $19.99. But each now has cheaper and more expensive tiers: ChatGPT Go at $8, Google AI Plus at $4.99, and $100 to $500 tiers for heavy users.

Does ChatGPT show ads?

On the Free and Go plans, ads may appear, according to OpenAI. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not get ads. Ads are not shown to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18. As of Oct. 13, 2026, OpenAI says ads are available in over 60 countries, after a US test that started in February 2026.

Are there student discounts for AI tools?

As of Oct. 13, 2026, yes, with deadlines. OpenAI’s Back to School offer gives eligible US college and graduate students four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus if they claim it by Oct. 31, 2026; after that, Plus is $20 a month. Google gives eligible US college students aged 18 and older a free year of Google AI Pro if they redeem it by Dec. 31, 2026. Anthropic says it has no standard discounted pricing for Claude paid plans.

Which has the biggest context window?

In the APIs, all three top models are around 1 million tokens. In the consumer apps, Claude lists 1 million on paid plans, Google lists 1 million on AI Pro and Ultra, and OpenAI lists 256K to 400K for reasoning on Go, Plus and Pro. A bigger window does not guarantee better answers on long documents.

Are my chats used to train the models?

Possibly. ChatGPT and Claude list training on consumer plans as opt-out on their pricing pages, so you have to switch it off yourself if you do not want it. Gemini uses your chats to improve its models while Keep Activity is on. Business and team plans are not used for training by default at OpenAI and Anthropic.

Can I use all three for free?

Yes. Each has a free tier. You will hit usage limits and miss some features, such as Claude Code and Research on Claude, or the larger models on ChatGPT and Gemini.

Bottom line

If you want one answer: start with the free tiers of ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, use them on your real work for a week, and pay for the one you keep reaching for. If you are on Google’s apps all day, Gemini’s AI Plus or Pro is the natural fit. If you want a coding agent and an ad-free pledge, Claude Pro includes Claude Code at $17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly. If you want the most choice of plans, including a budget tier, ChatGPT has it.
