"Est." means EIA does not publish a weekly price for that state, so it shows the average for the state's EIA region. EIA publishes its own price for 9 states.

What drives gas prices

The price on the pump is made of four parts:

  • Crude oil. The biggest single part. When world oil prices rise or fall, pump prices follow within a few weeks.
  • Refining. Turning crude into gasoline and diesel. Refinery outages, hurricanes and the switch to summer blends (which cost more to make) push this up.
  • Distribution and marketing. Pipelines, trucks and the station's own costs and margin.
  • Taxes. The federal tax is 18.4 cents a gallon on gasoline and 24.4 cents on diesel, plus state and local taxes that vary widely.

That is why prices differ so much between states: distance from refineries, local fuel rules and state taxes all add up.

Common questions

How often are these prices updated?

EIA surveys gas stations every Monday and publishes the averages that afternoon (a day later after a federal holiday). This page checks EIA every few hours and shows the new week as soon as it is out.

Why does my state show "Est."?

EIA publishes its own weekly average for only a handful of states. For the rest we show the average for the state's EIA region, so treat it as a guide: stations near you can be higher or lower.

Do these prices include taxes?

Yes. EIA's retail prices include federal, state and local taxes, so they compare with what you pay at the pump.

Why is gas so expensive in California?

California requires its own cleaner-burning gasoline that only a few refineries make, and its state taxes and fees are among the highest in the country. When one of those refineries has a problem, prices there jump.

Why does diesel cost more than regular?

Diesel carries a higher federal tax (24.4 cents a gallon against 18.4 for gasoline), and it competes with trucking, farming and, in winter, heating oil for the same part of each barrel.
