OnePlus 5 owners now have face unlock feature with OxygenOS beta

As previously promised by OnePlus, owner of the original OnePlus 5 will now have an unlocking feature via facial recognition. This is made possible with the new Oxygen OS Open Beta 3 that’s based on Android Oreo. Spotted by XDA, the new Face Unlock feature will now give OnePlus 5 owners the ability to unlock your phone when you tap on the device’s power button and then point the camera to your face.

The Face Unlock feature is a coveted feature on the OnePlus 5T smartphone. It’s mostly for convenience because the feature isn’t as secure as Apple’s Face ID technology or a fingerprint. For example, you can’t use this Face Unlock creature to authorize payments.

The phone’s Unlock Feature isn’t the most secure, to say the least. While the feature does provide some security, you could technically unlock the device by simply flashing the phone on their face for a split second and get into their phone. The new beta release also includes an updated security patch, bug fixes, and fixes for 5G Wi-Fi connection issues.

There’s currently no date on the final rollout after the beta, but XDA notes that the release could be sometime in January.
