Thanksgiving sets a new record for online sales

It seems that Thanksgiving Day sales stole some thunder from Black Friday sales. According to a new report from Adobe Analytics, Thanksgiving Day sales this year jumped more than 18 percent from last year’s sales.

The report says that US consumers spent a record $2.87 billion at online retailers Thursday. When you compare this to 2016, that number was sitting at $1.3 billion. That’s a staggering increase in sales just on Thanksgiving Day alone.

Black Friday sales were always considered to be the kickoff time for the shopping season and that’s where the best seasonal discounts were offered. But in recent years, that trend has been changing. Some analysts call the “graying” of Black Friday where some Black Friday sales start as early as Nov 1. These deals start early and the closer you get to the actual shopping days, the more deals you will find. Consumers are finding time to shop online with all of the cooking and dining that’s going on with their families and relatives.

Adobe’s predictions were exceeded as well. They set the prediction that there would be $2.79 billion in spending for 2017, but consumers came in with a record $2.87 billion.

Here are some other interesting points from Adobe:

  • As of 7AM PT, Black Friday sales were already clocked in at $640 million.
  • Since Nov. 1, consumers have spent $33.26 billion online, and an 18 percent jump from previous year sales.
  • More than 60 percent of all shopping has been done on either smartphones or tablets.
  • Among the top-sellers are Apple AirPods and Sony PlayStation VR, with PJ Masks and Hatchimals and Colleggtibles are the top-selling toys.
