The Replit Anthropic relationship is in dispute. Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad said at TechCrunch Disrupt that the company is no longer working with Anthropic. He then clarified that Anthropic models remain available to users while OpenAI’s ChatGPT is now the default, according to TechCrunch. An unnamed person familiar with the relationship told the outlet the partnership is still in place.
What the Replit CEO said about the Replit Anthropic split
Masad said the decision came down to cost, partnership and performance. OpenAI models are “better now” at building vibe-coded apps from scratch, he said, citing Replit’s internal and public benchmarks, TechCrunch reports. Replit announced an OpenAI partnership in August and had relied on Claude models before that. Masad said Replit had recently been a top-five Anthropic customer.
After the event, he told TechCrunch that Replit “remains model agnostic” and that OpenAI is now its preferred partner for Replit Agent.
Where the Replit Anthropic story gets murky
TechCrunch cites evidence pointing the other way. Replit’s website and a late-September blog post name Claude models in Replit Agent’s production environment. A product employee also promoted an Anthropic model on social media around the same time. The article has no response from Anthropic or OpenAI, so for now this is a disagreement over how far the change goes.
Why a default model matters
In the Replit Anthropic dispute, defaults do the work. TechCrunch notes that most customers keep the default model. So the switch could cut Replit’s spending with Anthropic a lot even if Claude stays on the menu. Masad didn’t share the size of that spending or Replit’s annual recurring revenue.
He did describe the customer mix. Enterprise was about 2% of Replit’s revenue last year and is about 15% this year, with more than half of revenue now business-to-business. He expects more than half to come from enterprise and government customers in 2027.
Other companies are managing AI costs too, as Accenture’s cap on Claude spending showed. Our Anthropic explainer tracks what’s confirmed about its finances. Neither says anything about Replit’s contract.
Editor’s take
The key word is “default.” A model can stay available and still lose most of its traffic, and neither side’s public statements settle which is happening in the Replit Anthropic case.
