Epic Games blames Meltdown bug for the performance experienced in Fortnite

Recently discovered bugs Meltdown and Spectre have shaken the tech industry and put it into a frenzy where companies are trying hard to patch the vulnerabilities. As security patches start getting applied, we’re starting to see early signs of performance issues from the patches that are designed to help resolve the security issues.

Epic Games has released a chart of CPU usage after the game developer applied patches to its back-end services to address the Meltdown vulnerability. The company has provided the chart to “provide a bit more context” to everyone around the recently login issues and stability that’s been going on with its Fortnite game.

“All of our cloud services are affected by updates required to mitigate the Meltdown vulnerability,” says an Epic Games spokesperson in a forum post. “We heavily rely on cloud services to run our back-end and we may experience further service issues due to ongoing updates.”

As Epic Games continues to work on resolving these performance issues, the developer warned that issues may continue next week as it works with cloud providers to address all of the issues that are happening and how it can prevent the issues from happening in the future.
