Google to pull YouTube from Fire TV and Echo Show as dispute with Amazon grows

The feud between Google and Amazon continues to grow. Three months ago, YouTube pulled its programming from Amazon’s Echo Show device. Because of this, Amazon stopped selling the Nest E Thermostat, Nest Secure alarm system, and Nest’s Camera IQ. It seemed like things were starting to get better when Amazon got YouTube back on the Echo Show by simply directing users to the web version, but apparently even that version will not be available after today.

A YouTube spokesperson in a statement today said that the company was withdrawing supports for its service on both Amazon’s Fire TV and Echo Show:

“We’ve been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other’s products and services. But Amazon doesn’t carry Google products like Chromecast and Google Home, doesn’t make Prime Video available for Google Cast users, and last month stopped selling some of Nest’s latest products. Given this lack of reciprocity, we are no longer supporting YouTube on Echo Show and FireTV. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon.”

YouTube will no longer be available from the Echo Show as of today. Customers that have the Fire TV will start receiving notifications warning them that the service will be unavailable on their device as of January 1st, 2018. Google hopes that by losing YouTube on its platform, Amazon will come to accept more reasonable terms and start 2018 off without continuing this feud.
