According to Reuters, it seems that a US court ruled against Yahoo saying that the company must face lawsuits concerning the massive hacks that occurred. Yahoo had two major breaches and is facing two lawsuits concerning those two.
The first data breach occurred in 2013 that impacted more than a billion of its users. The second data breach occurred in late 2014 that said to affect at least 500 million Yahoo accounts.
Last December, a judicial panel consolidated five class action lawsuits before Judge Koh. The class action lawsuits are to represent account holds who had their passwords, emails, and other sensitive information compromised.
As you’d expect, Yahoo argued to have the lawsuits dismissed by stating that the victims didn’t have any legal standing to bring the case against the company, but has been unsuccessful. US District Judge Lucy Joh even rejected that as well. In her decision, she stated that “All plaintiffs have alleged a risk of future identity theft, in addition to loss of value of their personal identification information.”
This ruling seems to be a big blow to Verizon, who is the new owner of Yahoo.
