HMD Global undeniably stole the show in 2017 with a featured phone at the time by showing off its newly-acquired license to the Nokia brand and re-releasing an updated version to the iconic Nokia 3310. The company is attempting the same trick this year by introducing the Nokia 8110 Reloaded.
The Nokia 8110 was one of the most iconic devices two decades ago. The new 8110 is definitely not a carbon copy of the 20-year-old handset that inspired it. They do, however, share a banana-shaped design and the stubby antenna is gone too.
The device is a lot smaller than the original 8110, but not nearly as small as HMD could have made it. The 8110 is still rather long and chunky, but it contains several nifty features that we’ll touch on in a little bit. For now though, you can rest assured knowing that the plastic slider feels a bit flimsy, for example.
The Nokia 8110 features a curved frame with a 2.4-inch color screen (320 x 240), 2-megapixel camera, much more capable software onboard, WiFI and even a 4G modem in it. The latter is mostly available so you can use it as a retro-styled WiFi hotspot. Having a 4G connection on the device isn’t completelyuseless if you don’t have another device that will take advantage of the hotspot. Comparing the 8110 to the 3310, the browser on the 8110 is much better at rendering websites on mobile. Mind you, it will still require a lot of patience to surface the web on such a small screen.
HMD added that several popular apps will be able to take advantage of the data connection available on the 8810. Comparing to the 3310, you could get on basic version of Twitter, Facebook and Facebook Messenger clients. We think that natively speaking, Instagram, WhatsApp and/or Snapchat will have more integration in the 8810 with even a decent navigation app. These types of features may be more appealing to the hipsters that want a 25-day battery life and some connection to the digital world as well.
Now that HMD has released (well, re-released) refreshes in the 3310 and 8110 Reloaded, they’re going to start calling them Nokia Originals. It’s their way of saying that they’re going to continue the route they’re on and keep bringing back some old-school phones that we all once were super excited for (and maybe still are?). We don’t necessarily know how successful the 3310 was because representatives for the company refuse to talk sales figures.

At €79 (roughly $97, or £70), the Nokia 8110 Reloaded is in the same price level as HMD’s new entry-level Android smartphone, the Nokia 1. Maybe it’s worth picking up and trying out? We’ll do a review later and let you know our thoughts.
