Alphabet executive chairman Eric Schmidt is stepping down, but will serve as technical advisor

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt will be stepping down from his role as Alphabet’s executive chairman, Alphabet announced today. Schmidt instead will be transitioning to a new position as a technical advisor at Alphabet while he continues to serve on Alphabet’s board.

Schmidt has served in senior roles at Google since 2001 when he was first brought on by Sergey Brian and Larry Page to serve as Google’s chief executive. He previously stepped down from his role at Google and now Alphabet’s role as executive chairman.

In a statement, Schmidt said that “Larry, Sergey, Sundar and I all believe that the time is right in Alphabet’s evolution for this transition. The Alphabet structure is working well, and Google and the Other Bets are thriving.” Schmidt noted that he will continue o expand his work in technology issues, philanthropy, and science. Most likely one of the reasons why Schmidt may have stepped down is to start pursuing other ambitions he’s be eyeing for a while. Whatever the case, he will continue to serve as a technical advisor and e on Alphabet’s board.
