UFC President Dana White said on Wednesday that he will strip Conor McGregor of his UFC lightweight championship title.
White spoke to Andrew Capucetti of TMZ Sports, he said that the upcoming fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 223 in April will be for the title Conor McGregor will lose.
Talking about a possible McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. rematch, he said that it would only make sense in the UFC. He added that neither side is in current talks about a rematch and there’s “nothing done.”
The 29-year-old Conor McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC since beating Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title at UFC 205 in November 2016. McGregor had shifted his focus towards the boxing match with Mayweather in August 2017, in which he lost by the 10th-round knockout.
White said that “Conor may never come back” because of the amount of money he has already made. He did mention August or September as possible return dates, but those are up for debate as of right now. Despite the uncertainty, White says that he hopes McGregor will face the winner of the UFC 223 match between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson.
