High-Yield Savings Rates

A high-yield savings account pays several times the interest of a typical bank savings account, and the money stays insured. We list the accounts we have checked, highest rate first, with the date we last checked each one. Use the calculator to see what a deposit would earn.

How we calculate

APY (annual percentage yield) is the interest a year of monthly compounding produces, so a $10,000 deposit at 4.00% APY earns exactly $400 in 12 months if the rate does not change.

Earnings. We compound monthly at the rate that gives the APY: interest = deposit × ((1 + APY)months ÷ 12 − 1). Monthly fees and taxes are not taken off, and savings rates can change at any time.

National average. The comparison uses the national average savings rate published by the FDIC, with the same formula.

Checking rates. Each rate is copied from the bank's own page on the date shown. Sponsored links never change the order, which is always by APY.

Common questions

Is my money safe in a high-yield savings account?

At a bank insured by the FDIC (or a credit union insured by the NCUA), deposits are covered up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category. Check the "Insured by" column.

Why do the rates change?

Savings rates are variable. Banks move them, often after the Federal Reserve changes its rate. That is why each row shows the date we checked it.

What is the difference between APY and interest rate?

The interest rate is the yearly rate before compounding. APY includes compounding, so it is the better number to compare accounts with.

Is the interest taxed?

Yes. Interest counts as income in the year it is paid, and the bank sends a 1099-INT form when it is $10 or more. The calculator shows interest before tax.
