Faster wireless charging is coming to the new iPhones later this year

Apple introduced wireless charging in their new iPhone 8’s and iPhone X this year as a signature feature. Even though the feature is very new to the iPhone lineup, the wireless charging is limited in software to a slower charging speed. This will be changing by Apple introducing faster 7.5W wireless charging.

Jim Dalrymple over at The Loop in his review notes that the new iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus will receive a software update due to release later this will bring fifty percent faster wireless charging in the three new iPhones.

After testing his review unit with Mophie Wireless Charging Base, Dalrymple said:

I usually charge my iPhone using a fast charging adapter, so it’s very quick. If I have 45 minutes before I’m heading out, I can plug in my phone and get a great charge before I leave.

That’s not what wireless charging does on an iPhone 8—it provides a slower charge, equal to that of the 5W USB Power Adapter that Apple provides with the iPhone. That will increase slightly later this year with a software update from Apple, but for now, that’s what you get.

Many wireless charging mats currently provide support for 7.5W charging, so it’s good to see that Apple will be enabling faster charging in a software update due to release later this year. It’s worth noting that you will need to purchase a USB-C Power Delivery-compatible wall brick and a Lightning to USB-C cable to enjoy faster charging over the wire.
