Apple making an effort to open up on Artificial Intelligence

When Apple first introduced Siri, it made headlines by having the most advanced and unique AI at the time. But since then, the company has continued to fall behind in its AI efforts. This is simply because the company tends to be very secretive about everything it does, this isn’t sitting well with its AI efforts. An interesting piece written by The Wall Street Journal makes some interesting points.

The tech giant this year has been making an effort to open up more about artificial intelligence, or AI. Apple launched a blog in July to talk about its findings and research, and has allowed its researchers to speak at conferences on artificial intelligence. For example, the company took part in TED Talk where Tom Gurber, co-creator of Siri, spoke.

As you can see from the image above, provided by The Wall Street Journal, Microsoft, Google and Facebook all have published incredible numbers of research papers. Apple on the other hand published one research paper in 2016 and three papers in 2017.

Apple’s rivals such as Microsoft and Google have been going at AI research for several years now and seem to be well-ahead of Apple. Other companies have been going hard to get top talent for their AI research teams. Apple on the other hand has had a hard time attracting talent due to how secretive it is.

In January of this year, Apple joined other companies such as Facebook and Microsoft as a member of the Partnership on AI. This is a group that’s committed to developing best practices for research.
