You can now control your FiOS set-top box with Alexa

If you’re a Verizon FiOS TV customer, there’s some good news for you. While the boxes haven’t been living on the cutting edge in terms of technology, they’re getting a new feature: voice control. Verizon quietly introduced an Alexa skill for its FiOS Video Media Server set-tops.

Through the skill, you can change the channel (by name or number) and control DVR playback with spoken commands. You will need Multi-Room DVR Enhanced or Premium service, but having Alexa by your side through an Echo speaker (or any Alexa-enabled device) will make it a little easier rather than trying to find that remote.

It’s evident that voice guidance is quickly becoming a must-have feature for modern cable and satellite services. No longer is it enough to offer a mobile app to customers, rather offering a more direct experience through voice seems to work out better for all.
