Apple, Amazon and Google are under pressure to cut ties with NRA

Apple, Amazon, Google and Roku are seeing increased pressure from the public to end streaming of National Rifle Association’s NRAtv, USA Today reports. The increased pressure comes following the Parkland, Fla. school shooting that left 17 dead.

Some of the people behind the push include executive producer Warren Leight of “Law & Order: SVU” as well as actors Misha Collins, Evan Handler, Amy Hargreaves, Alyssa Milano, Tara Strong and Ally Walker. On Thursday, they began pushing Amazon to stop the streaming of NRAtv, the NRA’s public relations channel, from Amazon Fire platform.

Aside from Amazon Fire, which is quite popular among consumers, other video streaming products are also seeing increased pressure. Google’s Chromecast, Apple TV, and Roku, are all seeing increased pressure to remove NRAtv from their platforms. NRA features 36 channels that cover topics such as politics, gun collecting and hunting.

A petition that was launched on Friday called for Amazon to end its relationship with NRAtv. It quickly gathered over 20,000 signatures by Saturday morning. “If NRA members want to watch NRAtv, they can find it without Amazon’s promotion,” the petition on Change.org said.

Roku in its part said that they’re deeply saddened by the recent tragedy that happened in Florida, but added that users were free to choose and control the channels they watch and download. “Our content policies prohibit the publication of content that is unlawful, incites illegal activities or violates third-party rights, among other things. If we determine that a channel violates these policies, it will be removed,” said spokeswoman Tricia Mifsud.
