Comcast fires 500 employees even though it claimed tax cuts would help create thousands of jobs

Comcast seems to be making headlines for negative actions. According to a report from Ars Technica, Comcast has fired around 500 salespeople right before Christmas. The company did this despite claiming that it would create thousands of new jobs in exchange for getting a big tax cut.

Now that the company has received a big tax cut from the government, the first thing Comcast starts doing is firing employees. Ars Technica says that the company apparently kept the firings under wraps while it continued its efforts to lobby for the tax cuts. The tax cuts were passed into law by the Republican-controlled Congress and was then signed by President Trump into law late December.

The Philadelphia Inquirer revealed the firings this week in an article. The article was published with information from an anonymous former employee, company documents, and other sources from within the company. Interestingly, the former employee who spoke with the Inquirer “could not be identified because of a non disclosure agreement as part of a severance package” deal with Comcast. The Inquirer notes that Comcast was able to “quietly” fire these employees in order to avoid press coverage until this week.

Comcast gave the following statement to Ars Technica: “Periodically, we reorganize groups of employees and adjust our sales tactics and talent. This change in the Central Division is an example of this practice and occurred in the context of our adding hundreds of frontline and sales employees. All these employees were offered generous severance and an opportunity to apply for other jobs at Comcast.”
