Apple refuting previous Face ID quality change report and says it’s ‘completely false’

The Jolt Journal (https://www.joltjournal.com)

We recently reported on a Bloomberg piece that due to production issues, Apple was forced to reduce the overall accuracy of the iPhone X in order to speed up production for the smartphone. Apple has now refuted the claim by Bloomberg and states that iPhone X will offer the same 1,000,000:1 accuracy, in a statement to The Verge.

The full statement, as you can read below, states that Apple’s claim of offering 1,000,000:1 accuracy is still true. Even though Apple is claiming false information in the Bloomberg report, certain parts of the report can also be true. Apple had indeed lowered the specifications of the component to allow it to be produced faster, but still offer the same 1,000,000:1 accuracy.

Essentially, what could have happened is that Apple lowered the quality control of the component, but still offering the advertised accuracy.

Statement from Apple (via The Verge):

Customer excitement for iPhone X and Face ID has been incredible, and we can’t wait for customers to get their hands on it starting Friday, November 3. Face ID is a powerful and secure authentication system that’s incredibly easy and intuitive to use. The quality and accuracy of Face ID haven’t changed. It continues to be 1 in a million probability of a random person unlocking your iPhone with Face ID.

Bloomberg’s claim that Apple has reduced the accuracy spec for Face ID is completely false and we expect Face ID to be the new gold standard for facial authentication.
